Indian state-owned companies participating in Eurosatory 2024, the international defense and security exhibition in Paris, reported strong interest in their 155mm artillery shells. This comes amidst a global shortage due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Yantra India Limited, a leading Indian defense manufacturer, showcased its range of 155mm artillery shells, including the ERFB (Extended Range Full Bore), HEER (High Explosive Extended Range), HE 77B (High Explosive), and HE 107 variants. These shells attracted significant attention from various countries.

The war in Ukraine has significantly depleted stockpiles of 155mm artillery shells across Europe. Countries that supplied ammunition to Ukraine are now looking to replenish their inventories. India, boasting the world’s third-largest production capacity for such shells, has emerged as a potential solution.

However, a recent controversy involving the possible unauthorized diversion of Indian-made shells to Ukraine has prompted the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) to tighten export controls. Companies have been instructed to obtain written assurances from potential buyers that the shells will not be re-exported to Ukraine.

Despite the added hurdle, initial reports suggest that many countries are willing to provide such assurances. While price negotiations and formal contracts are expected to take place in the coming months, the strong initial interest indicates potential for significant future sales of Indian artillery shells.
