The Royal Navy has issued a request for information (RFI) for a new Long Range Anti-Submarine Warfare Weapon (LRAW) to be launched from its Mk41 Vertical Launching Systems (VLS). This development presents an interesting parallel to advancements being made in India.

The Royal Navy seeks a solution that utilizes a “missile/rocket” delivery system to deploy lightweight torpedoes at extended ranges. While unmanned systems are being considered for the future, the current focus is on a missile-based approach. This closely resembles the core functionality of the Indian SMART system.

DRDO’s SMART system is a next-generation missile system designed and developed indigenously. It functions by carrying a lightweight torpedo and using a two-stage solid propulsion system to deliver it at far greater ranges than traditional methods. This significantly expands the reach of India’s ASW capabilities.

The similarities between the Royal Navy’s requirements and the existing SMART system raise intriguing possibilities for collaboration. India’s expertise in developing such a system could be valuable to the Royal Navy’s procurement process.

The convergence in ASW weapon development strategies between India and the Royal Navy presents a potential opportunity for knowledge sharing and even co-development efforts. This collaboration could lead to advancements in both nations’ ASW capabilities, furthering their maritime security postures.
