The Aviation Industrial Corporation of China (AVIC) recently stirred attention by posting a photo on social media featuring a Pakistani pilot seated in the cockpit of a J-35 stealth fighter jet, accompanied by the caption “Buyers give good reviews.” The image, shared on June 17, 2025, shows the pilot wearing a flight suit adorned with a Pakistani flag patch, hinting at a potential deepening of military ties between China and Pakistan. This move has sparked speculation about Pakistan’s interest in acquiring the advanced fifth-generation fighter, further solidifying the strategic partnership between the two nations.

The J-35, also known as the J-31 or FC-31 in its earlier iterations, is China’s second stealth fighter program, developed by AVIC as a competitor to advanced aircraft like the U.S. F-35. Designed for multi-role capabilities, the J-35 features advanced stealth characteristics, supercruise potential, and a sophisticated avionics suite, making it a formidable addition to any air force. The aircraft is believed to be tailored for export markets, with Pakistan emerging as a key potential buyer due to its long-standing military collaboration with China.

C.W. Lemoine, an American author and former military aviator who flew F/A-18 Hornets with the US Navy, has shed light on a recent incident involving a Royal Air Force (RAF) F-35B pilot who refused to leave his aircraft after making an emergency landing in Thiruvananthapuram, India. According to Lemoine, the pilot’s decision to remain by the jet was in line with standard protocol to safeguard the highly sensitive technology of the fifth-generation fighter.

The incident, reported by Mathrubhumi newspaper, occurred when the RAF F-35B pilot, identified only as Captain Mike, made an emergency landing at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. After completing customs formalities, the pilot declined to enter the terminal and instead stayed near his aircraft. This unusual behavior sparked speculation, with some suggesting it reflected a lack of trust in local authorities. However, Lemoine clarified that the pilot’s actions were a routine security measure.

India has embarked on the preliminary development of a conventional variant of its Agni-V intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), featuring a massive 7.5-tonne warhead, according to recent reports. This ambitious project marks a significant step in expanding the strategic and tactical flexibility of India’s missile arsenal, adapting the nuclear-capable Agni-V platform for conventional warfare. The development underscores India’s growing focus on precision and high-impact conventional strike capabilities to address evolving regional security challenges.

The conventional Agni-V variant is likely to see a reduced range compared to its nuclear counterpart, which boasts a range of over 5,000 km. Reports indicate the range of the new variant will be limited to 2,000–2,500 km due to the significantly heavier 7.5-tonne warhead. This trade-off reflects a deliberate design choice to prioritize payload capacity over distance, aligning with India’s strategic need for high-impact strikes within its immediate geopolitical region, particularly in the Indo-Pacific.

In a significant revelation, Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is yet to sanction funding for the development of India’s hypersonic cruise missile program. This delay persists despite a major technological breakthrough in scramjet propulsion, a critical enabler for hypersonic cruise missiles. Dr. Kamat’s remarks highlight both the progress made in hypersonic technology and the challenges in translating research into a fully funded weapon development program.

Speaking on the sidelines of a recent event, Dr. Kamat announced a significant achievement: “In hypersonic cruise missiles, we have recently proven scramjet propulsion for more than 1,000 seconds, which is a major breakthrough.” This milestone demonstrates India’s ability to sustain supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) propulsion, a complex technology that enables missiles to travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound) while maintaining maneuverability and precision.
