In a significant milestone for India’s defense sector, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has received clearance to export the Light Weight Integrated SU-30 Aircrew Helmet, a state-of-the-art protective gear designed for aircrew and pilots of the SU-30 MKI fighter jets. Announced on June 5, 2025, this development underscores India’s growing prowess in indigenous defense technology and its ambition to become a global defense export hub under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Developed by DRDO’s Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL) in collaboration with industry partners, the Light Weight Integrated SU-30 Aircrew Helmet is engineered to provide enhanced safety and functionality for aircrew during high-risk missions, including crash scenarios. The helmet serves as a platform for integrating Helmet-Mounted Display Systems (HMDS) and Radio Telephony (RT), ensuring seamless communication and situational awareness for pilots.

The helmet features an internally retractable dual optical grade polycarbonate visor system, offering independent locking mechanisms for each visor to protect against glare and impact. It is equipped with user-adjustable comfort pads and a fitting system, a mask attachment assembly, a chin strap assembly, adjustable ear cup assemblies, a nape pad, and an aircraft-compatible communication assembly. These features ensure optimal comfort, protection, and operational efficiency, making the helmet a critical asset for pilots operating the SU-30 MKI, a mainstay of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The SU-30 helmet’s lightweight design reduces fatigue during long missions, while its advanced materials and construction provide superior crash protection. Its compatibility with HMDS enhances a pilot’s ability to engage targets beyond visual range, a crucial capability in modern aerial combat. The helmet has undergone rigorous testing to meet international standards, ensuring its reliability in high-stress environments.
