In a significant display of naval air defence capability, INS Surat, the latest stealth guided-missile destroyer of the Indian Navy, has successfully carried out a “precision cooperative engagement” against a sea-skimming target, showcasing India’s growing mastery in network-centric warfare.

According to official statements, the ship executed a high-precision missile interception during a recent trial, where a Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) was launched to destroy a low-altitude incoming threat. The engagement was described as “cooperative,” strongly suggesting that the targeting data or mid-course guidance was provided by a second platform, potentially another warship or an airborne asset in the vicinity.

A cooperative engagement involves multiple platforms—ships, aircraft, or land-based systems—sharing sensor data in real-time to track and engage threats. In such scenarios, the platform launching the missile does not necessarily need to detect the target itself. Instead, it relies on targeting information relayed by a second unit, enabling extended-range coverage and coordinated response to aerial threats.

In this case, it is likely that INS Surat launched the MRSAM based on targeting data fed from another Indian Navy platform, such as a sister ship or a surveillance aircraft, thus highlighting the Navy’s integrated networked capabilities.

Developed jointly by India’s DRDO and Israel’s IAI, the MRSAM (also known as the LR-SAM or Barak 8 Naval Variant) is a cornerstone of India’s naval air defence. With a range of up to 70–100 km, active radar homing, and the ability to engage multiple targets simultaneously, it is tailored for modern multi-threat environments.
