India has solidified its position as a global research powerhouse, making significant strides in a wide range of critical technologies. A recent report, the Critical Technology Tracker by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, has revealed that India ranked among the top five countries in 45 out of 64 critical technologies in 2023, a substantial increase from 37 in the previous year.

The report further highlighted India’s remarkable progress in specific technological domains. The country secured the second position in seven technologies, demonstrating its growing expertise in these areas. Notably, India overtook the United States to claim the second spot in two emerging fields of technological research: biological manufacturing and distributed ledger technology.

In the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI), India’s ascent has been particularly impressive. The country ranks just behind the US and China in various key segments, including advanced data analytics, AI algorithms, hardware accelerators, machine learning, advanced integrated circuit design and fabrication, natural language processing, and adversarial AI.

India’s technological prowess extends to other critical areas as well. The country ranks third in several key technologies, including electronic warfare, autonomous underwater vehicles, sonar and acoustic sensors, photonic sensors, post-quantum cryptography, photovoltaic technology, nuclear waste management, supercapacitors, and advanced aircraft engines.

This surge in India’s technological capabilities is a testament to the country’s investments in research and development, coupled with a growing pool of skilled talent. It also reflects the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and promoting a knowledge-based economy.

As India continues to advance in these critical technologies, it is well-positioned to play a leading role in shaping the future of global innovation and development.
