The Indian Army is taking its firepower to the next level by integrating loitering munitions capabilities into its existing fleet of Mahindra Armoured Light Specialist Vehicles (ALSVs). This move comes after the successful integration of Spanish 120mm Alakran mortars and Milan-2T Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) onto the ALSV platform.
The ALSV, designed for manoeuvrability and tactical flexibility, has proven to be a valuable asset for the Indian Army. Previously, it could be equipped with ATGM launchers, machine guns, and grenade launchers. Now, the addition of loitering munitions adds another dimension to its offensive capabilities.
Loitering munitions, also known as kamikaze drones, offer extended loiter times above the battlefield, allowing for precise target identification and engagement. Integrating these into the ALSVs will transform them into mobile loitering munition carriers, significantly enhancing their offensive capabilities.
The Indian Army is reportedly seeking multi-canister launchers capable of carrying and launching at least four loitering munitions from a single ALSV. This “swarm” tactic will allow for a coordinated attack on multiple targets or provide persistent overwatch capabilities.
Talks are reportedly underway with a private sector company that recently supplied loitering munitions and related equipment to the Army. The goal is to seamlessly integrate their loitering munitions with the ALSVs and develop a control system that allows for operation directly from the vehicle.
While the offensive boost is undeniable, integrating loitering munitions also offers advantages in terms of reconnaissance and surveillance. These drones can gather vital intelligence before engaging targets, reducing risks to manned units.
