The Indian Navy’s ambitious Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF) program is set to enter a crucial phase as it transitions from the preliminary design review (PDR) to the critical design review (CDR). Expected to be completed by 2025, the CDR marks a significant milestone, signifying the detailed finalization of the aircraft’s design before proceeding to development and production.
The TEDBF, envisioned as a replacement for the aging MiG-29K, is a cornerstone of the Indian Navy’s modernization plans. The program has been steadily progressing, with the final PDR report nearing completion. Once approved, the project will seek the green light from the Cabinet Committee on Security for its subsequent stages.
While initial timelines projected the first flight for 2026, the complexities of aircraft development have necessitated a revised schedule. The TEDBF prototypes are now expected to take to the skies around early 2029, followed by an extensive flight testing phase involving approximately 1000 sorties, including crucial deck landing and takeoff maneuvers. This rigorous testing regimen will precede the aircraft’s clearance for production, likely around 2033-34.
The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) is spearheading the TEDBF project, with a substantial investment of nearly 14000 crores could be earmarked for its development. The Indian Navy Could place an order for 100 TEDBF aircraft to gradually replace the 45 MiG-29Ks starting from 2035.
To complement the TEDBF, the Navy is acquiring 22 Rafale M fighters. Additionally, four Rafale B trainers will be procured, although these are not designed for carrier operations.
