In a recent interview on The Gaurav Arya Podcast, Air Marshal Anil Chopra, a retired Indian Air Force (IAF) officer, emphasized the urgent need for India to acquire the F-35 stealth fighter jet. He expressed concerns about China’s rapid military modernization, including its plans to field 1000 J-20 fighters by 2035.

Chopra highlighted the significance of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program for India’s air power but stressed the importance of a stopgap solution until the AMCA becomes operational. He advocated for direct Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) control over the AMCA program to ensure its timely development and deployment.

The F-35, according to Chopra, is the most viable interim fifth-generation fighter jet that India can acquire. He noted that the aircraft was showcased at Aero India 2023, where several serving and retired IAF pilots had the opportunity to examine it closely. The positive response from the pilots and the more relaxed stance of the Pentagon suggest that the US government may be open to selling the F-35 to India.

Chopra emphasized that while India has not formally requested the F-35, it should consider pursuing this option as soon as possible. He argued that the F-35’s advanced capabilities, including stealth technology and long-range strike capabilities, would provide India with a significant edge over its adversaries.

The acquisition of the F-35 would not only enhance India’s air power but also strengthen its strategic partnership with the United States. It would also serve as a deterrent to potential adversaries in the region.
