The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is steadily progressing towards the completion of the Critical Design Review (CDR) for its Next Generation Main Battle Tank (NGMBT) design, intended for the Indian Army’s Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) program.

The NGMBT project has been making significant strides since its inception. After undergoing a preliminary design review (PDR) approximately three years ago, the DRDO has been diligently refining the design to meet the specific requirements outlined in the Army’s Request for Information (RFI) tender.

The NGMBT design incorporates several cutting-edge features, including Next-generation explosive reactive armour (ERA) will provide enhanced protection against various threats, including shaped charge warheads and kinetic energy penetrators. The NGMBT will be equipped with the DRDO-developed DATRAN 1500 HP engine, ensuring exceptional mobility and agility on the battlefield.

Recognizing the growing threat of drones to modern MBTs, the NGMBT design will incorporate advanced anti-drone technologies to neutralize aerial threats effectively.

DRDO’s NGMBT design will face stiff competition from other private sector companies vying for the FRCV contract. The Indian Army is expected to carefully evaluate all proposals, considering factors such as technological advancements, cost-effectiveness, and overall suitability for the program’s objectives.
