In a significant milestone underscoring its commitment to handle export orders, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd signed an agreement with Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler and Reederei GmbH & Co. KG Germany on Thursday, October 03, 2024, for the construction and delivery of 5th Multi-purpose vessel (MPV) of 7,500 DWT.
This contract is in line with the ‘Option Agreement’ signed between both the parties, for procurement of four additional MPVs from GRSE. The shipyard will build a total of eight vessels (08) at an approx. order value of 108 MUSD. Each MPV will be 120 metres long and 17 metres wide with a maximum draft of 6.75 metres.

The agreement follows 13 rounds of talks that began in 2022 after Mauritian calls for sovereignty were recognised by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the UN General Assembly in 2019 and 2021.
The world court, as the ICJ is known, is the principle judicial organ of the UN which adjudicates disputes between nations. Before granting independence to Mauritius in 1968, Britain was found to have unlawfully separated it to form a new colony on the Chagos archipelago named the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT).

India on Thursday trashed a report by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) and described it as a “biased” organisation with a “political agenda”.
In its report, the USCIRF that monitors universal right to freedom of religion criticised India for alleged violations of religious freedom. It also recommended to the US state department to declare India a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) in the context of religious freedom.

Nepal, India and Bangladesh on Thursday signed a long-awaited tripartite agreement to facilitate cross-border electricity trade, officials here said.
As per the agreement, Nepal will export its surplus electricity to Bangladesh via India annually during the rainy season, from June 15 to November 15. Nepal will use India’s transmission line to distribute electricity through its territory to Bangladesh.

Contract for construction and delivery of six 25T BP Tug was concluded with M/s Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) in consonance with “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative of the Government of India. This Tug is built under the classification rules of Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).

Maintaining peace in the Kashmir Valley is the biggest challenge for the security forces and they cannot let down their guard, Indian Army’s Srinagar-headquartered 15 Corps, Lt General, Rajiv Ghai said on Thursday.
Addressing a media conference here, Lt Gen Ghai said that the security situation had improved here over the past few years but to maintain peace in Kashmir is the biggest challenge, and ruled out any reduction in the number of deployed soldiers doing anti-militancy operations and guarding the Line of Control (LoC).

A mob stormed a police station in Manipur’s Ukhrul town and looted arms during a clash between two groups, officials said on Thursday.
Three persons were killed and 20 others injured in a gunfight that broke out between two groups on Wednesday over cleaning a disputed land in the town as part of ‘Swachhata Abhiyan’. The police station was attacked when the violence was going on.

Mumbai police have booked nearly 30 persons for holding a candlelight protest march without permission at the city’s Govandi area after Israeli strikes killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon, an official said on Thursday.
The protest march took place on Tuesday evening between Imamwada and Bainganwadi locality in violation of the prohibitory orders of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), which were issued on September 12, the official said.

External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, highlighted the need for mutual respect and boundaries in international diplomacy, particularly between democracies, during a recent discussion on India-US relations at the Carnegie Endowment office in Washington, DC. During his fireside chat with Carnegie’s President Mariano-Florentino (Tino) Cuellar on Tuesday, when asked about US leaders commenting on India’s democracy, Jaishankar stated, “And my personal view, which I have shared with many counterparts, is, look, you have every right to comment.
But I have every right to comment on your comment. So don’t feel bad when I do.” Further, Jaishankar acknowledged the globalised nature of politics, where countries’ internal issues can have international implications. “The world is very globalised,” he noted. “As a result, the politics of any country doesn’t necessarily stay within the national boundaries of the country, adding that “Now, the United States, of course, makes a special effort to ensure it doesn’t.

Sajid Hussain, Secretary of Information for the United Kashmir People’s National Party (UKPNP), raised serious concerns over ongoing human rights abuses in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir during the ongoing 57th session of the Human Rights Council. In his speech, he urged the United Nations to prioritise the follow-up on the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reports from 2018 and 2019, which addressed grave human rights violations in the forcibly divided former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan (PoJk) and (PoGB).
He stated, “These reports highlighted critical issues such as excessive use of force, arbitrary detention, and severe restrictions on freedoms of expression and association. The situation is deteriorating in Rawalakot, Pakistan-administered Kashmir, where radical Islamic forces are exerting pressure and issuing fatwas (religious decrees) against activists involved in human rights movements.

Chief of the Naval Staff of India, Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, flagged off INSV Tarini for Navika Sagar Parikrama II expedition at Ocean Sailing Node, INS Mandovi, Goa, on Wednesday. The first-ever global circumnavigation onboard is to be completed by two women Naval Officers, Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa, marking a significant event.
The historic voyage expedition will be covering four continents, through three Oceans and three challenging Capes in 240 days and travelling 23,400 nautical miles, scripting major milestone in maritime history and showcasing ‘Aatmanirbhar bharat’ initiative.

The Border Security Force (BSF) arrested two Bangladeshi nationals for illegally fishing on the Indian side of River Padma in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal. An engine-fitted country boat (EFCB) was also seized.
“The incident occurred nearly 1 km inside Indian territory. Troops from the Kakmarichar Border Outpost, who were out on routine patrol, spotted four persons on two EFCBs fishing in Indian waters, ” said N K Pandey, DIG and spokesperson, BSF, South Bengal Frontier.
