State-owned Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) is set to license produce the Russian KAMAZ-53949 Typhoon-K vehicle in India. Having successfully completed internal trials of the locally manufactured Typhoon-K, AVNL is now poised to offer this advanced military vehicle to the Indian Army.

The Typhoon-K motor vehicles are designed to provide integrated logistics support to combined arms and special units, including peacekeeping formations, in various environments. These vehicles are versatile, capable of carrying personnel and military cargo, and serve as a basic chassis for mounting various technical systems and weapons.

The Typhoon-K vehicles offer high levels of mine and ballistic protection. Special seats and design features mitigate the effects on the crew and troops from explosions of up to 8 kg TNT under any wheel or the bottom of the vehicle. High-level ballistic protection is achieved through a “sandwich” armor structure, consisting of inner conventional armor steel and new-generation outer ceramic armor.

The Typhoon-K vehicles share a common unitized automobile platform used in the KAMAZ family of tactical protected multipurpose all-wheel-drive medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. This platform ensures a high degree of component and assembly commonality within the family, enhancing logistical efficiency and maintainability.

Key Specifications and Capabilities

The 4×4 KAMAZ-53949 Typhoon-K boasts impressive combat and operational characteristics:

  • Mobility and Protection: The vehicle’s design ensures high mobility, superior protection, and significant fighting power. The ergonomics and design are tailored for combat scenarios.
  • Off-Road Performance: The Typhoon-K can ford waters up to 1.50 meters deep without preparation and can climb grades up to 30 degrees, making it highly adaptable to various terrains.
  • Engine and Transmission: Equipped with powerful 350hp and 450hp diesel engines and automatic transmission systems, the Typhoon-K can reach road speeds of at least 100 km/h and travel up to 1,000 km without refueling.
  • Suspension System: A hydropneumatic suspension system ensures high ride comfort and effective vibration damping. The system allows for changes in suspension stiffness, ground clearance, and body position relative to the road surface, both automatically and manually. Ground clearance is adjusted based on vehicle speed, road quality, and driving style.
