In a significant stride toward self-reliance in defense technology, Astra Microwave Products Limited (AMPL), a Hyderabad-based leader in RF and microwave systems, has showcased its indigenously developed S-Band Active Antenna Array Unit (AAAU) Radiating Plate Assembly (RPA).
This cutting-edge system, realized in collaboration with the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), a laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), represents a milestone in India’s radar technology development. The AAAU was demonstrated at AMPL’s state-of-the-art Radar Research and Development (R&D) facility in Bengaluru, where it underwent rigorous testing and validation, highlighting India’s growing capabilities in advanced defense electronics.
The S-Band AAAU Radiating Plate Assembly is a critical component of modern radar systems, designed to provide active electronically scanned array (AESA) functionality. Operating in the S-band frequency range (2-4 GHz), this system offers enhanced detection, tracking, and targeting capabilities, making it suitable for a variety of defense applications, including airborne, naval, and ground-based radar systems. The AAAU’s active antenna array technology enables rapid beam steering without mechanical movement, improving response times and reliability in dynamic operational environments.
The showcased AAAU features a 16-meter radiating plate, a key element that houses the radiating elements responsible for transmitting and receiving RF signals. This large-scale assembly is complemented by an array of indigenous components, including:
- RF Line Replaceable Units (LRUs): These units handle the radio frequency signal processing, ensuring high performance and modularity for maintenance and upgrades.
- BSN LRUs: These include beam steering network components that enable precise control of the radar beam, a critical feature for AESA systems.
- ISN Firmware and Software: Developed in-house, the firmware and software provide the intelligence behind the AAAU’s operations, managing beam steering, signal processing, and system diagnostics.
The entire system has been designed, developed, and finalized in-house by AMPL, in close association with LRDE/DRDO, underscoring the company’s technical expertise and commitment to indigenous innovation.
