The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has announced that its Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) is now set for Army user trials, with the Indian Air Force (IAF) also participating, after three successful flight trials conducted off the coast of Odisha. These trials, which took place in Chandipur, demonstrated the system’s capability against high-speed, low-altitude threats, marking a significant step forward in India’s defense capabilities.

The trials involved engaging high-speed targets simulating enemy aircraft or drones flying at very low altitudes, a scenario where air defense systems are often put to the test. The VSHORADS successfully intercepted these targets, proving its effectiveness in real-world combat conditions.

For the first time, the system was tested in its full configuration, including all necessary components for operational use, ensuring that the trials were as close to real-world deployment conditions as possible.

The upcoming Army user trials will assess the system’s performance in diverse operational scenarios, focusing on its integration into existing military structures, ease of deployment, and maintenance requirements. The inclusion of the IAF in these trials underscores the system’s potential for joint operations between the two forces.

The VSHORADS is designed to counter threats like low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and drones, which are increasingly relevant in modern warfare. Its deployment would significantly enhance India’s air defense capabilities, particularly in protecting sensitive installations and troop concentrations.

Adani Defence has been confirmed as the production partner for the VSHORADS program. This collaboration between DRDO and Adani underscores a growing trend in India towards involving private sector capabilities in defense manufacturing, aligning with the “Make in India” initiative.

After Successful completion of the user trials could see the VSHORADS being inducted into service with both the Indian Army and the IAF, providing a much-needed boost to the short-range air defense segment.
