India plans to position its ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program on the global stage by inviting international partners to join the project after the aircraft’s first flight. This strategic move aims to make the fifth-generation stealth fighter jet export-ready from the outset while addressing the program’s significant funding and production requirements.

The AMCA program, India’s flagship fifth-generation fighter jet initiative, is poised to play a critical role in modernizing the Indian Air Force (IAF) while also tapping into the global defence market. Sources familiar with the development told idrw.org that once the initial prototypes are flown, India will actively approach countries seeking access to fifth-generation fighter technology.

Unlike established platforms such as the F-35, Su-57, or J-20, the AMCA offers a unique opportunity for nations that currently lack access to advanced stealth fighters due to geopolitical constraints or affordability issues.

Developing a fifth-generation fighter jet is an expensive and technologically challenging endeavour. The AMCA program faces massive financial requirements, driven by the Development of a new engine and Private sector-led production line.

To offset costs and reduce the unit price of the aircraft, India aims to onboard international partners. By engaging nations interested in fifth-generation fighters early in the program, the AMCA’s per-unit cost can be driven down through economies of scale.

Sources indicate that at least 5-6 countries are closely observing the AMCA program’s progress. These nations, which are keen to acquire fifth-generation fighter technology but lack access to other options, are potential collaborators and future customers.

Once the AMCA achieves its first flight milestone, it is expected to generate greater international interest. According to sources, the program’s momentum post-first flight will likely attract additional partners and buyers, creating a broader coalition to support its development and production.
