The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has revised its plans for the AMCA fighter jet program, opting for a new model involving two Development cum Production Partners (DcPPs). This revised approach aims to ensure a competitive and efficient development and production process for the advanced 5th-generation fighter jet.

Previously, the MoD had proposed a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) model, where the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) would manufacture the initial batch of 40 AMCA Mk1 jets powered by older F414 engines. Subsequently, a private sector majority-owned company would take over the production of the AMCA MkII, with HAL holding a minority stake.

However, the SPV model faced challenges as it required the private sector company to invest in setting up a new production line in Tamil Nadu and manage the entire supply chain, from sourcing materials to assembling the aircraft. To address these concerns, the MoD has now decided to provide funding to both HAL and soon-to-be-selected private sector companies to develop their respective AMCA prototypes.

The two prototypes may incorporate minor variations in internal systems to allow for comparison and evaluation. Following rigorous testing, the best-performing aircraft will be selected as the L1 Pricing, securing the right to manufacture the AMCA jets. Interestingly, the MoD intends to award production contracts to both companies, likely in a 60-40 ratio. This dual-production model will create two distinct production lines, ensuring a robust supply chain and reducing the risk of delays or disruptions.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is expected to procure a total of 120 AMCA jets, including 40 AMCA MkI and 80 AMCA MkII variants. The revised development and production model is expected to accelerate the AMCA program and ensure the timely delivery of these advanced fighter jets to the IAF.
