The year 2024 was momentous for India’s defence sector, marking significant milestones that enhanced the country’s security and technological capabilities. From new acquisitions to policy shifts, India took decisive steps toward strengthening its armed forces. Here are the top five defence developments in India in 2024:
1. First flight of Tejas Mk1A
In a major boost to indigenous defence manufacturing, the Indian Air Force began the induction of the Tejas Mk1A fighter jets, produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Featuring upgraded avionics, AESA radar, and enhanced weapons integration capabilities, the Tejas Mk1A represents a leap forward in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in fighter aircraft. The induction marks the beginning of a phased rollout of 83 jets ordered under a ?46,898 crore contract.
2. Progress in the AMCA Program
India’s ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program achieved key milestones in 2024, with the Defence Ministry approving funds for its prototype development. Designed as a fifth-generation fighter with stealth capabilities, the AMCA aims to rival global standards and is expected to enter production by 2035. The program signifies India’s focus on maintaining air superiority and reducing dependency on foreign platforms.
3. Successful Testing of Hypersonic Weapons
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) made headlines with successful tests of hypersonic glide and cruise missiles. These advanced systems can travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5, making them critical for future warfare. The tests showcased India’s ability to develop next-generation deterrent capabilities and cemented its position among the select group of nations pursuing hypersonic technology.
4. Strengthening Naval Capabilities
The Indian Navy witnessed a surge in modernization efforts, with the commissioning of the INS Vindhyagiri, a Project 17A stealth frigate, into service. Additionally, India finalized agreements for next-generation submarines with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology under Project 75(I). These developments underscore India’s intent to bolster maritime security amid growing regional challenges.
5. Indigenous Kamikaze Drones Unveiled by NAL
The National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) unveiled indigenous kamikaze drones equipped with locally developed engines. These drones, capable of operating at ranges up to 1,000 kilometers, are a testament to India’s focus on autonomous warfare and cost-effective solutions for precision strikes. The development highlights India’s shift toward leveraging unmanned technologies for modern battlefield scenarios.
