The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) are embarking on an ambitious initiative to integrate the Tejas MkII fighter jet with semi-autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly referred to as CATS Warrior “loyal wingmen.” This cutting-edge project aims to leverage advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for real-time coordination and mission execution between manned and unmanned platforms.
Equipped with state-of-the-art AI, these drones will seamlessly collaborate with the Tejas MkII, sharing mission data and dynamically adapting to evolving combat scenarios. This capability is particularly valuable in high-threat environments, where coordinated manned-unmanned operations can outmanoeuvre and overwhelm adversaries.
ADA and HAL plan to use the Tejas MkII as a testbed to develop and validate these advanced technologies. The platform offers a perfect blend of advanced avionics, open architecture, and robust performance, making it an ideal candidate for integrating AI-driven UAVs.
The insights gained from this program will lay the groundwork for integrating loyal wingman technologies into India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). As a next-generation stealth fighter, the AMCA will benefit from the proven capabilities of these semi-autonomous UAVs, ensuring enhanced survivability, operational flexibility, and mission success.
Once Tejas MkII gains momentum, ADA and HAL plan to start testing real-time communication and coordination between manned and unmanned platforms. As the program progresses, it will also Refine AI algorithms for adaptive decision-making in combat scenarios. Also Validating UAV autonomy in executing complex missions with minimal human intervention.
Loyal wingman drones are designed to operate in conjunction with crewed fighter jets, enhancing their operational reach and effectiveness in modern combat scenarios. These UAVs offer a wide range of capabilities:
- Autonomous and Coordinated Operations: They can operate independently or in groups, taking real-time direction from human pilots while carrying out missions autonomously.
- Mission Flexibility: Loyal wingmen can perform diverse roles, including:
- Air-to-Air Combat: Engaging enemy aircraft alongside crewed jets.
- Air-to-Ground Combat: Striking ground targets with precision.
- Electronic Warfare (EW): Jamming enemy communications and radar systems.
- Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR): Gathering and relaying critical battlefield intelligence.
