The Indian aerospace industry is abuzz with excitement as the Tejas MkII, the next-generation variant of the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, inches closer to taking shape. The Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE), a premier Indian Air Force (IAF) institution, has been entrusted with a crucial role in preparing the Tejas MkII for its maiden voyage.

According to reports in idrw.org, aircraft assembly is set to begin this month in Bangalore, with small equipment and fuselage sections already arriving at the HAL facility. The first fully assembled Tejas MkII is expected to roll out next year, marking a significant milestone in the program.

ASTE test pilots will spearhead every step of the testing process, meticulously evaluating the new platform and validating its incorporated technologies. This comprehensive approach ensures the aircraft’s airworthiness and optimal performance.

Before the first flight, a series of rigorous ground-based tests are planned. These include engine runs, ranging from low-speed to high-speed taxi trials, to assess the aircraft’s functionality on the ground. Additionally, ASTE pilots will be actively involved in pilot interface testing. This entails evaluating the control laws of the Digital Fly-by-Wire Control System, the cockpit architecture, and the pilot’s checklists and emergency procedures.

While the identity of the pilot who will have the honour of performing the Tejas MkII’s first flight remains under wraps, speculation is rife. What’s certain is that ASTE’s team boasts the best of the best, ensuring a highly skilled and experienced individual will be entrusted with this momentous task.

The Tejas MkII program represents a significant leap forward in India’s indigenous fighter jet development. ASTE’s dedicated efforts and expertise will be instrumental in ensuring the smooth and successful transition of the Tejas MkII from drawing board to operational reality.
