India’s formidable Sukhoi-30MKI fleet is set for a significant upgrade as the Ministry of Defence is poised to give the final green light to a comprehensive modernization program. This ambitious project aims to equip the aircraft with cutting-edge indigenous systems, dramatically enhancing its combat capabilities.
Key areas slated for improvement include the radar, mission computer, electronic warfare suite, cockpit layout, and weapons systems. The upgrade will see the integration of advanced Indian-made components, marking a significant step towards self-reliance in the defense sector.
A particularly exciting development is the planned integration of manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) capabilities into the first 84 Sukhoi-30MKIs. This will allow the fighter jets to operate in tandem with advanced autonomous drones and loyal wingman UCAVs, significantly expanding their operational effectiveness.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will spearhead the upgrade process, which will be executed in multiple phases. Before commencing the overhaul of the entire fleet, two Sukhoi-30MKIs will undergo rigorous testing to certify the upgraded systems. HAL aims to complete this crucial phase within the next three years.
The Super Sukhoi upgrade program is a strategic move by the Indian Air Force to maintain its air superiority while fostering domestic defense industries. With this modernization, the Sukhoi-30MKI is poised to remain a potent force in India’s aerial arsenal for years to come.
