Bengaluru-based startup SpaceFields Pvt. Ltd., incubated at the esteemed Indian Institute of Science (IISc), has made significant strides in aerospace technology by successfully unveiling and hot-firing India’s inaugural AeroSpike Rocket Engine. This groundbreaking achievement marks a pivotal moment for the Indian space industry as the country ventures into advanced propulsion systems.
The static-test campaign for the 168mm rocket motor was conducted at the Propulsion test facility at IISc Challakere. Upon ignition, the engine exhibited initial chuffing, which was quickly followed by a stable and steady-state combustion phase. The rocket motor utilized a high-performance HTPB-based composite propellant, demonstrating its capability to deliver substantial thrust and impulse.
Key performance metrics achieved during the static-fire test include a maximum recorded pressure of 11 bar, a peak thrust of 2000 Newtons, and a total impulse of 54485.9 Newton-seconds. These impressive figures underscore the potential of AeroSpike technology for various space applications.
SpaceFields Pvt. Ltd. has demonstrated its innovative approach by selecting titanium grade 5 as the primary metal for constructing the engine. This material choice ensures structural integrity and durability, making it well-suited for the demanding environment of rocket propulsion. Additionally, the company’s proprietary GFRP-based ablative thermal insulation effectively protects the spike from the scorching hot gases generated during combustion. Notably, the patent for this innovative thermal protection system was recently granted, solidifying SpaceFields’ position as a leader in aerospace technology.
