Sandeep Metal Craft Private Limited (SMPL), widely regarded as India’s largest manufacturer of fuzes, has announced a significant expansion of its production capabilities, doubling its output to meet an unprecedented surge in export orders. The company, headquartered in Nagpur, Maharashtra, has seen a sharp rise in demand for its advanced fuze systems, particularly for mortars and 155mm artillery shells, from key international markets including Europe, the United States, Italy, Germany, and Brazil. With orders now numbering in the hundreds of thousands, SMPL is cementing its position as a global leader in precision ammunition components.
Established in 1989, Sandeep Metal Craft has built a reputation for excellence in the design and manufacture of high-precision fuzes, catering to both domestic and international defense sectors. The company’s product lineup includes sophisticated systems like the FUZE 447, FUZE 213 MK5 (M-3), FUZE PERCUSION DA NO 117, FUZE DA 5A, and FUZE 162 MK8 (M-2), each engineered with advanced safety and reliability features to meet the rigorous demands of modern warfare.
Among SMPL’s standout offerings is the FUZE 447, a sophisticated fuze designed for versatility and effectiveness. Featuring a complex assembly of 127 components, this fuze incorporates multiple safety mechanisms that are disarmed by set-back and centrifugal forces during firing. Soldiers can easily set the detonation time, enabling the ammunition to function in air burst mode at a pre-determined moment. The fuze’s intricate design includes a clockwork mechanism, a centrifugal safety device, and a detonator safety device, ensuring both reliability and effectiveness in air burst and direct action modes. With its enhanced safety features, the FUZE 447 is exceptionally secure during storage and transportation, making it a preferred choice for militaries worldwide.
The FUZE 213 MK5 (M-3) is another flagship product driving SMPL’s export success. This time-mechanical fuze operates with a plunger released by set-back force upon firing, triggering a sequence that allows the striker to initiate the ignition train at a pre-set time, adjustable up to 80 seconds in 0.5-second increments. The fuze also functions in percussion mode upon nose impact, offering dual-mode flexibility. With a reliability rate of ±1% from the set time and a design that ensures safety in handling, transportation, and storage, the FUZE 213 MK5 is both soldier-friendly and highly dependable.
Designed for direct action, the FUZE PERCUSION DA NO 117 exemplifies rugged reliability. Upon firing, set-back and centrifugal forces release mechanical safeties, arming the striker to detonate the ammunition on impact—even at low angles. Its straightforward yet robust construction ensures consistent performance, while built-in safeties keep it inert until deployed, enhancing its suitability for mortar and artillery applications.
The FUZE DA 5A is tailored for mortar systems, offering a simple yet sturdy design. Set-back forces unlock its mechanical safeties—detent, ball, and shutter—arming the fuze for detonation upon direct impact. This fuze provides critical safety during handling and transport, combined with reliable operation, making it a vital component for mortar-based munitions.
Rounding out SMPL’s portfolio is the FUZE 162 MK8 (M-2), a direct-action fuze with a streamlined design. Set-back force triggers a sequence that arms the striker, which activates the detonator on impact. A safety cap further protects the fuze during storage and transit, ensuring both reliability and security.
The doubling of SMPL’s production capacity comes as a direct response to the growing needs of its export markets. Countries like the USA, Italy, Germany, and Brazil, alongside broader European demand, have placed substantial orders for fuzes compatible with mortars and 155mm shells—key systems in modern artillery arsenals. This surge reflects SMPL’s reputation for delivering high-quality, precision-engineered products that meet stringent international standards, including ISO-9001:2008 and AS 9100C certifications.
“We are thrilled to see such strong demand from our international partners,” a spokesperson for Sandeep Metal Craft said. “This expansion not only underscores our technical expertise but also our commitment to supporting global defense needs with reliable, cutting-edge solutions.”
