The Russian aerospace firm United Aircraft has expressed interest in partnering with India to locally manufacture its Il-76MD-90A transport aircraft. This proposal aims to replace the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) ageing fleet of Il-76MDs, which were acquired in the early 1980s.

The Il-76MD-90A is a modernized version of the Il-76MD, featuring significant upgrades and improvements. Powered by new, more powerful PS-90A-76 engines, the aircraft offers enhanced take-off, landing, and cruise performance, increased payload and flight range, improved efficiency, and reduced noise and emissions. Over 70% of the aircraft’s systems have been updated, resulting in a payload increase from 40 to 60 tons and enhanced flight safety.

United Aircraft believes that local manufacturing in India would be advantageous for both parties. By leveraging existing infrastructure and trained manpower, India could save on costs and expedite the procurement process. The similarity between the Il-76MD-90A and the

IAF’s existing Il-76MD fleet would facilitate a smooth transition.
The IAF currently operates around 17 older Il-76MDs, which are restricted from flying on international civilian traffic routes due to their outdated navigation systems. The service is evaluating its requirements and considering the possibility of combining the replacement of both the Il-76MDs and the An-32 transport aircraft into a single platform.

The Airbus A400M has emerged as a potential contender for this combined replacement. However, its high price and operating costs could pose challenges. The IAF will need to carefully assess the trade-offs between cost, capabilities, and long-term sustainability before making a final decision.

United Aircraft’s proposal offers a viable alternative for the IAF, providing a modern and capable transport aircraft with the potential for local manufacturing and economic benefits. As the IAF continues to evaluate its options, the decision on how to replace its ageing transport fleet will have significant implications for India’s military capabilities and strategic interests.
