Amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Russia has extended an offer to India to replace Ukrainian-made gas turbine engines (GTE) on its warships with its own M90FR model. The move comes at a critical juncture for the Indian Navy, which heavily relies on Ukrainian engines for its fleet.

The M90FR, developed by United Engine Corporation (UEC), boasts a maximum capacity of 27,500 horsepower and is touted as a superior alternative to the older Ukrainian engines, which date back to the 1960s and 1970s. According to Russian officials, the new engine offers better fuel efficiency, longer overhaul intervals, and advanced control systems. Furthermore, Russia has expressed its willingness to establish local production of these engines in India.

India has been actively exploring domestic options for marine gas turbines (MGT) to reduce its dependence on foreign suppliers. The war in Ukraine has underscored the urgency of this endeavour, as it has disrupted the supply chain of Zorya-Mashproekt, the primary supplier of MGTs to the Indian Navy. Public sector behemoth Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and private sector player Bharat Forge are reportedly being considered for developing indigenous MGT solutions.

While the Russian offer presents a potential short-term solution, India’s long-term strategy is to build a robust domestic MGT ecosystem. This will not only ensure self-reliance but also create opportunities for the Indian defence industry.

The Indian Navy is carefully evaluating its options, considering factors such as cost, technology transfer, and long-term sustainability. The decision will have far-reaching implications for the country’s naval capabilities and its strategic autonomy.
