In a significant development, officials from Rostec, the Russian state-owned defense conglomerate, have confirmed to idrw.org that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s (HAL) existing facility in Nasik could be rapidly converted for the production of the Su-57, Russia’s advanced fifth-generation fighter aircraft, should India choose to move forward with the plan.

The Nasik facility, which has a proven track record in manufacturing the Su-30MKI for the Indian Air Force (IAF), is currently capable of producing the Su-57. The facility was instrumental in assembling nearly 220 Su-30MKI aircraft for the IAF, and Rostec officials have stated that many of the tools and machinery used for the Su-30MKI program are directly compatible with the Su-57, streamlining the transition to Su-57 production.

This alignment in tooling and manufacturing infrastructure means that India could potentially begin producing the Su-57 at a significantly reduced cost, given that many of the processes and equipment required for the Su-30MKI are already in place. This could represent a crucial cost-saving measure, making the prospect of Su-57 production more feasible in the near future.

In addition to the manufacturing capabilities, Rostec has also assured idrw.org that any offer for licensed production of the Su-57 would come with the complete Transfer of Technology (ToT). This is a critical component of the deal, as it would enable India to not only assemble the aircraft locally but also enhance its indigenous capabilities by developing expertise in the design, maintenance, and production of the Su-57.

The offer of ToT for the Su-57 is part of Russia’s broader strategy to deepen defense cooperation with India, offering more opportunities for India to build on its defense self-reliance goals. This could also pave the way for further advancements in India’s aviation technology, as it would allow Indian engineers and technicians to gain hands-on experience with the fifth-generation fighter.

The potential for licensed production of the Su-57 in India is a major step forward in strengthening India’s air defense capabilities. The Su-57, with its cutting-edge stealth, speed, and maneuverability, would significantly enhance India’s strategic air power, positioning the Indian Air Force to better counter evolving threats from adversaries.
