In a significant development for India’s defense sector, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a leading Indian defense public sector undertaking, and Embraer S.A., the Brazilian aerospace giant, are exploring a collaboration to jointly work on future programs under Embraer’s military wing. This potential partnership aims to leverage BEL’s expertise in electronics and defense systems alongside Embraer’s advanced military aircraft platforms, marking a new chapter in Indo-Brazilian defense cooperation.

BEL, known for its capabilities in radar, avionics, electronic warfare systems, and communication equipment, is a key player in India’s defense ecosystem. Embraer, the world’s third-largest civil aircraft manufacturer and a significant name in military aviation, produces advanced platforms like the C-390 Millennium multi-mission transport aircraft and the A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft. The proposed collaboration seeks to combine BEL’s indigenous technological strengths with Embraer’s globally recognized aerospace expertise to co-develop and integrate cutting-edge solutions for military programs.

In a significant leap toward next-generation weapon systems, Secretary Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO inaugurated the Centre for Electromagnetic Launch Technology (CEMaLT) — a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to advanced research and development in Electromagnetic (EM) Railgun technology. The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of senior DRDO leadership, including Prof. Prateek Kishore, Director General (ACE); Dr. Manu Korulla, Director General (R&M); Mrs. Chandrika Kaushik, Director General (PC&SI); and Shri A. Raju, Director of the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE).

CEMaLT has been envisioned as a unique infrastructure to support India’s long-term aspirations in cutting-edge directed energy weapons. The EM Railgun system — unlike conventional guns that rely on chemical propellants — utilizes electromagnetic forces to launch projectiles at hypersonic velocities. This not only eliminates the need for explosive charges but also offers significantly enhanced range, precision, and lethality.

In a striking revelation from the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict, high-resolution satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies, analyzed with advanced edge detection algorithms, has provided compelling evidence of significant damage to Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Base Bholari following Indian precision strikes on May 10, 2025. The imagery, initially shared by NDTV’s Vishnu Som and enhanced by open-source intelligence (OSINT) analysts, indicates the presence of an aircraft—potentially an F-16 or Saab 2000 Erieye AWACS—inside a heavily damaged hangar, marking a critical blow to Pakistan’s air capabilities during Operation Sindoor.

PAF Base Bholari, located in Sindh’s Jamshoro district near Hyderabad, is one of Pakistan’s newest and most strategic airbases, operational since December 2017. Housing No. 19 Squadron with F-16A/B Block-15 ADF fighters, No. 18 Squadron with JF-17 Thunder Block-2 jets, and Saab 2000 Erieye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, Bholari is a linchpin of Pakistan’s Southern Air Command. Its proximity to Karachi and the Arabian Sea makes it vital for both air defense and maritime operations, with suspected nuclear weapon storage adding to its strategic significance.

On May 11, 2025, Vision Times (also known as Kanzhongguo), a news outlet affiliated with Falun Gong—a spiritual movement critical of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)—reported that the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully destroyed a Chinese-made HQ-9 surface-to-air missile (SAM) system in Pakistan. The HQ-9, a long-range semi-active radar homing (SARH) SAM developed by the People’s Republic of China, has been a key component of Pakistan’s air defense network, supplied by Beijing to counter India’s aerial capabilities.

The destruction of the HQ-9 system highlights vulnerabilities in Chinese military technology, which Pakistan has heavily relied upon. The IAF’s success in penetrating and destroying the system using loitering munitions—often referred to as “suicide drones” for their ability to hover and strike with precision—demonstrates India’s advancing tactical capabilities. This operation follows reports of earlier failures by Chinese-supplied air defense systems, such as during India’s 2019 Balakot airstrike, where Pakistani defenses could not intercept Indian jets.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has reaffirmed the enduring relevance of its S-125 Neva/Pechora air defense system, powered by the 5V24 missile, following its successful engagement of Turkish-made drones operated by the Pakistani Army during recent border skirmishes. Originally a Soviet-era surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, the S-125 has undergone significant upgrades, including full digitization and integration with the IAF’s Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS), ensuring its operational viability until 2030.

The system’s recent performance, highlighted by its ability to neutralize advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), underscores India’s ability to extend the life of legacy platforms through indigenous modernization, aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative.

In a startling revelation, an India Today report has disclosed that Turkey played a significant role in supporting Pakistan during its recent four-day conflict with India, supplying over 350 drones and deploying military operatives to coordinate attacks. According to sources cited by India Today, two Turkish military operatives were killed during India’s Operation Sindoor, a retaliatory campaign launched on May 7, 2025, in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives.

The operation, which targeted terrorist infrastructure and Pakistan Air Force (PAF) bases, has exposed Turkey’s deep military involvement, including the coordination of drone strikes against Indian military and stalker targets, prompting India to block Turkish state-run broadcaster TRT on platform X and fueling calls for a boycott of Turkish goods.

A new low-cost Counter Drone System in Hard Kill Mode ‘Bhargavastra’, has been designed and developed by Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL) signifying a substantial leap in countering the escalating threat of drone swarms. The micro rockets used in this counter-drone system underwent rigorous testing at the Seaward Firing Range, Gopalpur achieving all designated objectives. Three trials were conducted for the rocket at Gopalpur on May 13 in presence of senior officials of Army Air Defence (AAD). Two trials were conducted by firing one rocket each.

One trial was conducted by firing two rockets in salvo mode within 2 seconds. All four rockets performed as expected and achieved the required launch parameters underscoring its pioneering technology in mitigating large-scale drone attacks. A Unified Solution for Countering Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Threats: ‘Bhargavastra’ boasts of advanced capabilities for detecting and eliminating small, incoming drones at distances of upto 2.5 km.

India’s measured and precise military strikes on terror dens inside Pakistan as well as Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK), as part of ‘Operation Sindoor’ have received praise from John W Spencer, a globally-acclaimed urban warfare researcher, who described it as a “massive victory for India.”

John Spencer is a researcher of urban warfare and serves as the Chair of Urban Warfare Studies at the Modern War Institute. Sharing his observations, takeaways and impact of ‘Operation Sindoor’, he said that unlike previous attacks, this time India didn’t wait, it didn’t appeal for international mediation or issue a diplomatic demarche, rather launched warplanes on the terror infrastructure that was responsible for the April 22 massacre in Pahalgam.
