India on Friday successfully test-fired the Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VLSRSAM) for the second consecutive day from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur on the Odisha coast, defence sources said.

A statement from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) confirmed that both tests on September 12 and 13 were successful. “In both the tests, the missile successfully intercepted a high-speed low altitude aerial target mimicking sea skimming aerial target,” the statement said. For safety reasons, the Balasore district administration temporarily relocated 3,100 residents from six villages within 2.5 km radius of ITR Launch Pad 3.

India on Wednesday invited the Philippines to partner with the Indian defence industry in co-development and co-production of various military equipment. Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane, in his remarks at the fifth meeting of India-Philippines joint defence cooperation committee in Manila, highlighted how India is boosting its defence manufacturing capabilities and exporting military hardware to various countries.

Both sides appreciated operationalisation of white shipping information exchange arrangement and a decision to open a defence wing at the Indian embassy in Manila in near future, according to the defence ministry.

The US State Department imposed sanctions on China-based firms, for their supply to Pakistan’s ballistic missile program under the missile sanctions laws on Thursday.

“The Department of State is taking action against five entities and one individual that have been involved in the proliferation of ballistic missiles and controlled missile equipment and technology. Specifically, the Department of State is designating the Beijing Research Institute of Automation for Machine Building Industry (RIAMB) pursuant to Executive Order 13382, which targets proliferators of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a press statement.

Highlighting the progress on border talks with China, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that 75 per cent of disengagement problems with Beijing are sorted out; however, the two nations “still have some things to do.”

Jaishankar also underlined how India and China never had an easy relationship in the past. “We did not have an easy relationship in the past. What happened in 2020 was in violation of multiple agreements, the Chinese moved a large number of troops to the Line of Actual Control. We, in response, moved our troops up.. Some progress on border talks with China. 75 per cent of disengagement problems are sorted out. We still have some things to do,” Jaishankar said during his conversation with Ambassador Jean-David Levitte at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy on Thursday.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday conducted raids at multiple locations in Punjab in connection with a March 2023 incident when pro-Khalistan supporters protested outside the High Commission of India in Canada’s Ottawa.

During the protest, demonstrators raised an anti-India slogan, tied Khalistani flags on the boundary wall of the High Commission and one of its leading members hurled two grenades inside the premises of the building.

Punjab Police on Friday arrested the main perpetrator among suspects involved in a low-intensity grenade explosion in Chandigarh’s upscale Sector 10 residential locality. The explosion occurred at a house on Wednesday. The Chandigarh Police on Thursday announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for any information leading to the arrest of the two suspects.

The police have arrested the main perpetrator of the grenade blast case in a joint operation with the central Agency. The case is solved with the nabbing of Rohan Masih, resident of Amritsar rural, and identification of the other accused as well, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav wrote on X.

 A terrorist associate was apprehended with arms & ammunition on Friday in J&K’s Poonch district. Officials said that the terrorist associate was held with arms in a joint operation by the police and security forces in the Surankote area of Poonch district.

“A joint ‘Naka’ (Checkpost) of police, army’s 16 Rashtriya Rifles and 38 battalions of CRPF was laid at Potha Bypass. During searches, the security personnel noticed a person coming from Surankote towards Potha in a suspicious manner. The suspect tried to escape after seeing the security forces, but was apprehended,” the officials added.

In a setback for India’s Tejas Mk-1A fighter program, GE Aerospace has confirmed that the delivery of two F404-IN20 engines, originally scheduled for later this month, has been pushed back to November. This delay adds to the ongoing challenges faced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in procuring the necessary engines for the production of the Tejas Mk-1A.

The Tejas Mk-1A, a more advanced variant of the Tejas light combat aircraft, made its maiden flight in March this year with Category B reserved engines. HAL had been relying on GE Aerospace to supply 16 engines for the current financial year. However, due to production constraints, the delivery schedule was revised, and GE Aerospace committed to providing six engines before the end of March 2025.

Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Thursday told President Vladimir Putin that PM Narendra Modi had told him to personally brief the Russian President about the talks he had held with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Aug 23. During a meeting with the Russian President in Konstantinovsky Palace in St Petersburg, Doval said: “PM told said he is keen to brief you about his visit to Ukraine and his meeting with President Zelenskyy.

And he wanted me to come specially and personally and brief you about the talks. The talks was in a very closed format; it was only the two leaders. “He (Zelenskyy) had his two persons with him, and I happened to be with the PM; so I was a witness to that, I attended the conversation,” Doval is seen telling President Putin, according to a video shared on social media by Sputnik.
