On March 24, 2025, Rear Admiral Ajay D Theophilus, Flag Officer Commanding Goa Naval Area (FOGA) HQGNA, unveiled the latest additions to the Naval Aviation Museum in Goa, marking a significant enhancement to one of India’s premier showcases of maritime air power. The star attraction of the event was the Sikorsky UH-3H helicopter, now on permanent display, offering visitors a rare opportunity to step inside and experience the world of Naval Aviators firsthand.

The unveiling ceremony, held with traditional naval pomp, underscored the Indian Navy’s commitment to preserving its rich aviation heritage while inspiring future generations. The Sikorsky UH-3H, a versatile and iconic helicopter, joins an impressive lineup of aircraft at the museum, which is located near Bogmalo Beach in Goa. This addition not only enriches the museum’s collection but also provides an immersive glimpse into the operational life of the Navy’s airborne warriors.

The UH-3H, a variant of the Sikorsky H-3 Sea King family, has a storied history with the Indian Navy. Known for its robustness and adaptability, it served in multiple roles, including anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and troop transport, before being phased out of active service. Now meticulously restored, the helicopter stands as a testament to the Navy’s technological evolution and the skill of its aviators. Visitors can explore its interior, from the cockpit to the crew compartment, gaining insight into the challenges and triumphs of naval aviation.

Speaking at the event, RAdm Theophilus highlighted the significance of the new exhibit. “The Sikorsky UH-3H represents a proud chapter in our naval aviation legacy. By opening it to the public, we aim to honor the dedication of our aviators and ignite curiosity among young minds about the Navy’s role in safeguarding our seas,” he said. He also emphasized the museum’s role as an educational hub, bridging the gap between the armed forces and civilians.

The Naval Aviation Museum, established in 1998, is one of the few of its kind in Asia, showcasing a range of aircraft, engines, and artifacts that trace the journey of India’s naval air arm. The inclusion of the UH-3H adds an interactive dimension to the experience, allowing visitors to step beyond the ropes and connect with history in a tangible way. Museum officials anticipate that this hands-on feature will draw aviation enthusiasts, students, and tourists alike, further cementing its status as a must-visit destination.
