At the recent Marrakech International Air Show, Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) confirmed a significant contract with the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces to manufacture WhaP 8×8 armoured vehicles. The deal marks a major milestone in the defence relationship between India and Morocco. Tata prepares to deliver over 400 units of this versatile Armoured platform in various configurations to Morocco, with more than 150 being of the WhaP 8×8 type. The vehicles will be manufactured locally in Morocco, in partnership with local industry, strengthening Morocco’s defence manufacturing capabilities.

The Moroccan version of the WhaP 8×8 has been adapted to meet the specific operational needs of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces. Unlike the amphibious Indian version, the Moroccan WhaP variant has had its amphibious capabilities removed, a modification that not only extends its operational range but also allows for an expanded and optimized troop transport compartment. The redesigned compartment offers improved space and comfort, enabling it to carry more personnel or equipment.

In terms of armament, the Moroccan WhaP 8×8 will be equipped with a range of weaponry from non-Tata suppliers. According to exclusive images shared by TASL, the new armament suite includes:

Electronic Warfare and Jamming Systems: To counter evolving threats on the battlefield, the WhaP 8×8 will be equipped with electronic warfare systems capable of jamming enemy communications and radar.

30mm Combat Turret: This turret will provide the vehicle with substantial firepower, effective for engaging light armored vehicles and ground targets.

12.7mm Remotely Controlled Machine Gun: This remote weapon station will enhance defensive capabilities, enabling the vehicle to engage threats while keeping the crew safe within the armored cabin.

105mm Tank Hunter Gun: Designed to give the vehicle anti-tank capabilities, this gun will allow the WhaP 8×8 to neutralize heavily armored targets from a distance, adding a crucial layer of versatility.

Anti-Tank and Anti-Personnel Missiles: The vehicle will be armed with missile systems capable of engaging armored targets and personnel with precision-guided munitions.

The partnership between TASL and the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces signifies a leap forward for Morocco’s defense sector, which aims to increase self-reliance in military production. By manufacturing the WhaP 8×8 domestically, Morocco not only gains access to advanced defense technology but also develops local skills and capabilities in armored vehicle production. This collaboration also reflects India’s commitment to strengthening defense ties with African nations, demonstrating the potential for further exports of indigenous military hardware.
