Larsen & Toubro (L&T), one of India’s leading defense manufacturers, has announced a partnership with Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) to jointly bid for the Indian Army’s prestigious Towed Gun System (TGS) project. The collaboration aims to offer the Dhanush 155x52mm towed howitzer, which will be locally manufactured by L&T if the bid is successful.
The TGS tender, initially for 400 units, is a critical part of the Indian Army’s modernization plan, with the potential to expand to 1,200 units in subsequent phases. The selected howitzer will become the backbone of the Army’s artillery, replacing aging systems with advanced, indigenously built platforms.
The Dhanush 155x52mm is an advanced towed artillery system designed to meet the Army’s operational requirements. A crucial aspect of the system is its compliance with the weight limitations set by the Army, ensuring a platform weighing under 15 tons, making it ideal for rapid deployment in diverse terrains.
The TGS tender is witnessing intense competition from India’s defense majors, with Tata Advanced Systems and Bharat Forge emerging as strong contenders. Both companies are offering a lighter variant of the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), which has already been cleared for production and is awaiting a manufacturing contract for 307 units under a separate order.
The lighter ATAGS variant provides a competitive edge due to its proven design, extensive testing, and production readiness, giving Tata and Bharat Forge an upper hand in the bidding process.
The Dhanush howitzer, while meeting weight requirements, will face rigorous testing and evaluation to prove its reliability and performance under diverse operational conditions. The competition from Tata and Bharat Forge’s lighter ATAGS variant, with its advanced capabilities and production readiness, adds pressure on L&T and AWEIL.
