The Ordnance Parachute Factory (OPF) in Kanpur, a unit under Gliders India Limited (GIL), is gearing up for a groundbreaking project – the production of India’s first GPS-equipped guided supply drop parachutes. This innovation mirrors the precision guidance technology used in missiles, but adapted for delivering critical military supplies.

The new GPS-guided parachutes will revolutionize the way the Indian Army delivers supplies to remote or inaccessible locations. With the capability to handle loads up to one ton, these parachutes will ensure pinpoint delivery of essential equipment to troops on the ground.

This project aligns perfectly with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India) and Make in India initiatives. The development and production of this crucial technology will be entirely indigenous, showcasing India’s growing prowess in defense manufacturing.

The OPF has a proven track record of excellence. Their previously developed P-7 heavy drop parachute system, capable of landing equipment weighing up to seven tons, received wide acclaim from the Indian Army. Bulk Production Clearance (BPC) has already been granted for the P-7 system, and deliveries to the Army have commenced.

The production of GPS-guided supply drop parachutes marks a significant leap forward for India’s defense capabilities. This innovative technology will enhance the Army’s logistical flexibility and ensure more precise and efficient delivery of critical supplies during operations.
