The developers of Modern Warships, a popular cross-platform arcade online action game, have announced the imminent arrival of INS Vikrant (IAC-I), an aircraft carrier currently in service with the Indian Navy. This exciting addition, brought to life by Artstorm FZE, Cube Software, and Gaijin Entertainment, promises to inject fresh tactical depth into the game’s dynamic naval battles. Known for its realistic portrayal of modern warships, jets, and drones, Modern Warships continues to expand its roster with this indigenous Indian marvel, blending real-world design with arcade-style action.
INS Vikrant, India’s first domestically built aircraft carrier, commissioned in September 2022, is a symbol of national pride and engineering prowess. In Modern Warships, it joins a lineup of global naval titans, offering players a chance to command a vessel that mirrors its real-world counterpart’s versatility and power. The gameplay mechanics for Vikrant align with the standard tactics of aircraft carriers in the game: deploying its air wing for reconnaissance, air strikes, and enemy suppression. With a capacity to carry up to 36 aircraft—including MiG-29K fighters, Kamov-31 helicopters, and MH-60R multi-role helicopters—Vikrant’s aviation capabilities make it a formidable force for dominating the skies and striking distant targets.
However, Vikrant’s role doesn’t end with its air wing. Unlike some carriers that retreat to the sidelines after launching their aircraft, Vikrant is equipped to engage directly in combat. Armed with a suite of missiles, grenade launchers, and four powerful autocannons, it boasts a high probability of finishing off enemies already weakened by allied assaults. This offensive versatility allows players to adopt a more aggressive stance, closing in on battered foes rather than lingering at a distance waiting for aviation reloads. The autocannons, in particular, provide a rapid-fire punch, making Vikrant a threat even after its air wing is depleted.
That said, players will need to exercise caution. Vikrant’s air defense, while functional, is not its strongest suit. In the face of a large-scale missile barrage—a common occurrence in Modern Warships’ intense PvP battles—its defenses may falter. Here, the carrier’s excellent mobility comes into play. Powered by four General Electric LM2500+ gas turbines generating over 80 megawatts, Vikrant can reach speeds of up to 28 knots (52 km/h) in real life, a trait reflected in its in-game “running qualities.” This speed enables tactical retreats, allowing players to reposition and regroup when overwhelmed, preserving the ship for a counterattack.
The addition of INS Vikrant reflects Modern Warships’ commitment to authenticity and variety. Artstorm FZE, the game’s original developer since its 2021 mobile launch, alongside Cube Software and Gaijin Entertainment—who partnered in 2023 to bring the game to PC—have meticulously crafted Vikrant to mirror its real-world strengths and limitations. Its 262-meter length, 45,000-tonne displacement, and STOBAR (Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery) configuration are nods to the actual vessel, designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited. In-game, this translates to a balanced playstyle that rewards strategic foresight—launching devastating air strikes while knowing when to engage or evade.
For Modern Warships players, Vikrant offers a fresh tactical layer. Its blend of air dominance and close-combat capability makes it a hybrid threat, distinct from pure carriers or heavily armored battleships. Yet, its moderate air defense underscores the need for allied support or clever maneuvering, aligning with the game’s emphasis on teamwork and skill. As announced by the developers on platforms like X, Vikrant’s arrival has sparked excitement among the game’s 500,000 daily active users, who eagerly await the chance to test this “leader of the airspace” in battle.
