Civil Aviation Minister KR Naidu has reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to fostering indigenous aircraft manufacturing capabilities in India. This push for self-reliance appears to be translating into a green light for the National Aerospace Laboratories’ (NAL) ambitious Regional Transport Aircraft (RTA) program.

The NAL has made significant progress on the RTA program, with the conceptual design of the RTA-90 nearing completion. Furthermore, the Project Definition Phase (PDP) for the RTA was successfully launched in April 2022.

The NAL Director estimates the development of India’s first RTA to require a substantial investment of approximately $2 billion. This ambitious project is likely to be executed through a special-purpose vehicle (SPV) to ensure efficient management and resource allocation.

The success of the RTA program hinges on collaborative efforts. While NAL shoulders the primary responsibility for design and development, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will play a crucial role in the program. HAL’s expertise will be vital in the production of engines and avionics for the RTA.

Looking beyond domestic capabilities, the program may also involve sourcing essential components from leading Western engine and avionics manufacturers. This strategic partnership will ensure access to cutting-edge technology, bolstering the RTA’s competitiveness in the global market.

Reports suggest a phased development approach for the RTA. The initial focus might be on a propeller-powered variant, followed by the development of a jet-powered version. This phased approach allows for a more manageable development process and the opportunity to gather valuable experience before undertaking the complexities of jet engine technology.

Local manufacturing is a cornerstone of the RTA program. HAL, along with private sector companies, will spearhead the production effort within India. Fortunately, India boasts a growing pool of private sector companies already supplying components like fuselages to Boeing and Airbus. Leveraging this existing expertise will be crucial for streamlined and efficient manufacturing.

The RTA program represents a pivotal moment for Indian aviation. The successful development and production of this aircraft will not only bolster the nation’s self-reliance in the aerospace sector but also create significant economic opportunities. The RTA has the potential to become a game-changer, catering to the growing demand for regional air travel within India and potentially emerging as a competitive export product.
