The indigenously developed Zorawar light tank has arrived in Ladakh for a month-long trial at the Nyoma field firing range. This critical phase of testing, which commenced in mid-November, is scheduled to conclude by mid-December 2024. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the Zorawar is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing the Indian Army’s capability in high-altitude and challenging terrains.

The Zorawar light tank has already successfully completed its internal trials and firing trials, which were jointly conducted by L&T and DRDO. These tests validated the tank’s core systems, including its advanced firepower, mobility, and survivability features. Now, the platform has entered the critical user trial phase, where it will be assessed by the Indian Army under operational conditions.

The Zorawar light tank is specifically designed to operate in high-altitude regions like Ladakh, where the rugged terrain and harsh weather demand lightweight yet powerful armored platforms. The tank’s compact design and enhanced mobility make it ideal for rapid deployment in such scenarios, where traditional main battle tanks face mobility constraints.

Following the ongoing trials, the Indian Army will conduct extensive user trials over the next two years, testing the tank’s performance in various operational conditions and combat scenarios. These evaluations will ensure the platform meets the Army’s stringent requirements.

The Zorawar light tank is expected to be cleared for limited production by 2027, with an initial order of 59 units. This batch will mark the beginning of its induction into the Army, with potential for further orders based on its operational performance.
