One of the Two new stealth frigates being constructed for the Indian Navy in Russia is expected to be delivered by the end of 2024, despite delays caused by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
The first frigate, named INS Tushil, is currently undergoing sea trials in Russia and is anticipated to be ready for acceptance trials by the Indian Navy soon. Delivery is expected in September 2024. The second frigate, INS Tamal, is slated for delivery in February 2025.
These frigates are part of the Tushil class, the successor to the Talwar-class frigates currently in service with the Indian Navy. The project faced challenges due to the war in Ukraine, particularly regarding the Ukrainian-made engines intended for the frigates built in Russia. To address this, Indian shipyard personnel were sent to Russia to assist with engine installation.
While the Russian-built frigates are nearing completion, construction of two additional Tushil-class frigates is progressing at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in India. The first of these Indian-built frigates is expected to launch for sea trials soon, with delivery targeted for mid-2026.
