In a significant boost to India’s artillery capabilities, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has announced that two major contracts for the Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) system are slated for signing before the fiscal year concludes on March 31. These contracts, valued at Rs 5,700 crore for high-explosive pre-fragmented ammunition and Rs 4,500 crore for area denial munitions, underscore India’s commitment to enhancing its military’s operational readiness and self-reliance.
This contract, amounting to Rs 5,700 crore, will supply the Indian Army with ammunition boasting a strike range of 45 kilometers. The high-explosive pre-fragmented shells are designed to maximize damage through fragmentation upon impact, making them highly effective against both personnel and light armored vehicles. This upgrade will significantly extend the reach and lethality of the Pinaka systems currently in use.
With a contract value of Rs 4,500 crore, this deal will equip the Army with munitions capable of launching to a distance of 37 kilometers. These area denial munitions are unique for their ability to saturate a designated area with multiple bomblets. This includes both anti-tank and anti-personnel minelets, creating a hazardous zone for enemy forces, effectively denying them access or mobility within the impacted area. This capability adds a strategic layer to battlefield control, allowing for more dynamic and responsive tactical operations.
The Pinaka rocket system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Tata Power SED, is a testament to India’s growing indigenous defense manufacturing sector. The system’s ability to fire a salvo of rockets in rapid succession provides a formidable fire support option for ground forces.
