In a significant step toward enhancing its operational capabilities in challenging terrains, the Indian Army has signed a ?197.35 crore contract with Ashok Leyland Defence Systems Ltd for the supply of 500 pre-fabricated short chassis buses. These specialized vehicles, tailored for rugged mountainous environments, are set to bolster the Army’s logistical reach and troop mobility across India’s northern and northeastern borders.

Ashok Leyland, a leading name in India’s automotive and defense manufacturing sectors, secured the contract following a competitive bidding process. The short chassis buses, designed with reinforced structures and cutting-edge technology, reflect the Army’s emphasis on reliable, high-performance vehicles capable of navigating the steep gradients and harsh conditions of India’s Himalayan frontiers.

The pre-fabricated short chassis buses are built to meet the Indian Army’s stringent requirements for operations in difficult terrains. Featuring a 4×2 configuration, these buses are powered by a robust 105 kW (141 hp) engine, delivering a top speed of 80 km/h. With a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 9,440 kg, the vehicles strike a balance between durability and maneuverability, making them ideal for transporting troops and equipment across winding mountain roads and high-altitude regions.

The short chassis design enhances the buses’ agility, allowing them to negotiate tight turns and narrow paths commonly encountered in mountainous areas like Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and the Northeast. Reinforced structural components ensure resilience against the wear and tear of rugged landscapes, while advanced safety features—including improved braking systems and stability controls—prioritize the well-being of personnel on board.

The procurement of these 500 buses aligns with the Indian Army’s ongoing efforts to modernize its transport fleet and improve operational efficiency. With a significant presence along India’s borders with Pakistan and China—regions marked by some of the world’s most inhospitable terrain—the Army requires vehicles that can perform reliably under extreme conditions. These short chassis buses will facilitate rapid troop deployment, logistical support, and evacuation missions, ensuring that soldiers can maintain a strong presence in remote and strategically vital areas.

“The addition of these specialized buses to our fleet will significantly enhance our ability to operate effectively in mountainous regions,” an Indian Army spokesperson said. “They are a critical asset for sustaining our operational tempo and ensuring the mobility of our forces.”
