The Indian Air Force (IAF) has taken a significant step forward in its Netra Mk1A Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWACS) program by entrusting Embraer, the Brazilian aerospace giant, to source EMB-145 regional jets for the upgraded platform. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) recently approved the IAF’s plan to enhance its AWACS capabilities by procuring additional aircraft to bolster India’s aerial surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.
The IAF already operates three Netra Mk1 AWACS, also based on Embraer’s EMB-145 regional jets. These aircraft, however, are set to receive an advanced successor, the Netra Mk1A, featuring enhanced radar systems and surveillance capabilities. Since Embraer has ceased production of the EMB-145 jets, the IAF has turned to the Brazilian company to find suitable airframes from global operators who may be interested in reselling their fleets.
Embraer’s involvement in the Netra Mk1A program does not stop at sourcing the jets. The Brazilian aerospace major, like in the original Netra Mk1 program, will be responsible for structural modifications to house the sophisticated radar and other mission-critical systems. These modifications are essential to integrate the AWACS mission consoles and advanced radar equipment, ensuring that the aircraft can handle the unique demands of airborne surveillance and command operations.
The EMB-145 will require a complete structural reconfiguration to accommodate the new 4D radar system, operator consoles, and other instrumentation that make the aircraft an airborne command centre. These structural enhancements will be done in collaboration with DRDO, which is responsible for integrating the radar and sensor systems on the airframes.
The addition of Netra Mk1A AWACS to the IAF’s fleet is part of India’s broader strategy to enhance its aerial early warning and control capabilities. The IAF’s current fleet of three Netra Mk1 AWACS has been pivotal in operations, providing real-time surveillance and early warning during both peacetime and conflict scenarios.
The Netra Mk1A program aims to expand this capability with more aircraft, allowing for better coverage across India’s extensive borders. The AWACS platforms serve as crucial assets for controlling airspace during military operations, giving commanders the ability to coordinate complex aerial manoeuvres and monitor adversary movements. With rising security challenges from neighbouring countries, an expanded AWACS fleet ensures the IAF remains well-prepared for modern warfare.
