Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) recently received a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the supply of 156 LCH Prachand attack helicopters, with 90 units earmarked for the Indian Army and 66 for the Indian Air Force (IAF). However, this might just be the beginning for the Prachand’s journey with the IAF.

The IAF is reportedly reconsidering its plans to procure additional heavy-lift Apache attack helicopters. This opens the door for a potential expansion of the Prachand order. The IAF is impressed with the Prachand’s capabilities and might opt for more indigenous helicopters to fulfill its needs.

The IAF is actively exploring the Prachand’s potential as an anti-drone defense system. The five Prachands received from HAL as part of the Limited Series Production (LSP) line are currently undergoing evaluation in this role. Positive results could lead to further orders, potentially pushing the total procurement numbers beyond 100 for IAF.

While the IAF might not place immediate additional orders, it’s considering a “Batch-II” procurement in the future. The growing threat posed by low-cost drones and loitering ammunition is a key driver behind this potential expansion.

Both the Army and IAF recognize the Prachand’s potential and might look to increase their orders beyond the initial 156. This collaborative approach signifies a commitment to a robust indigenous defense ecosystem.

The Prachand’s performance as an anti-drone platform and the IAF’s evolving needs will determine the extent of future orders. The initial 156 helicopters represent a significant step forward, and the potential for further expansion highlights the Prachand’s growing importance in India’s aerial defense strategy.
