India’s state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) was reportedly aware of potential supply chain challenges faced by GE Aerospace regarding the F-404 engine for the Tejas Mk1A fighter program, according to sources close to idrw.org.
These sources claim that GE informed HAL of these difficulties at the time the contract for 99 F-404 engines was signed in 2021. The concerns stemmed from global supply chain disruptions related to obtaining specialized alloys in the post-pandemic world.
As a consequence, HAL is currently facing delays exceeding 11 months in receiving the latest batch of F-404 engines from GE. This setback significantly impacts the Tejas Mk1A program’s delivery timelines.
The revelation raises questions about HAL’s decision-making process. While acknowledging the potential supply chain issues, HAL proceeded with the F-404 engine selection. This raises concerns about exploring alternative engine options or mitigating strategies that could have been implemented.
The Tejas Mk1A program is crucial for the Indian Air Force, aiming to bolster its fighter jet squadron strength. The delay in engine deliveries throws a wrench into these plans, jeopardizing the program’s overall timeline.
