Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to collaborate closely with the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) to enhance the adaptability of the Tejas MkII fighter aircraft. The key focus of this partnership is to optimize the aircraft’s air intake to accommodate potential engine changes in the future.
Currently designed for the F-414 engine, the Tejas MkII’s air intake will benefit immensely from the wind tunnel testing data provided by ADA. This data will be crucial for HAL to conduct in-depth studies on the impact of different engine configurations on the air intake system.
Looking ahead, the possibility of integrating either the GTRE Kaveri 2.0 or the AMCA engine into the Tejas MkII has been explored. While the Kaveri 2.0, with its estimated 90kN thrust, will share similarities with the current Dry Kaveri engine, the AMCA engine program is still in its early stages of negotiation with dimensions yet to be fixed. To ensure seamless integration of these potential engines, HAL will also require detailed undercarriage information from ADA.
By optimizing the air intake and undercarriage, HAL aims to create a versatile platform capable of accommodating different engines without major structural modifications. This approach will not only extend the aircraft’s lifespan but also provide the Indian Air Force with greater flexibility in future engine choices.
