Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is finalizing an agreement with GE Aerospace to commence local manufacturing of the F-414 engines in its Bangalore facility. This production effort is crucial for equipping the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) upcoming fleet of Tejas MkII and AMCA MkI aircraft. Once the deal is concluded—expected by the end of this year—HAL aims to produce the first “Made in India” F-414 engine within three years.

HAL is setting up an annual production capacity of approximately 30 F-414 engines at full scale, a significant milestone that will contribute to India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Under the agreement, around 80% of the F-414 engine components will be manufactured domestically, with HAL developing specialized capabilities to meet this requirement. This local production marks a strategic leap, aligning with India’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative and aiming to reduce dependency on foreign imports for critical defence technology.

The initial contract with GE Aerospace covers the production of 99 F-414 engines, tailored to meet the immediate needs of the Tejas MkII program. As the IAF plans to procure 120 Tejas MkII jets and an additional 40 AMCA MkI jets, demand for these engines is expected to increase, potentially doubling orders by 2028. This scaling strategy aligns with HAL’s roadmap to meet future requirements, anticipating the production of at least 200 engines by 2035.

Beyond initial deliveries, HAL’s production facility will continue to manufacture F-414 engines over the coming decades to ensure a steady supply of spare engines and parts for the Tejas MkII and AMCA fleets. HAL estimates that an additional 360 engines will be required over the next 40 years to sustain the operational readiness and longevity of the IAF’s fleet. This long-term vision will not only support India’s military preparedness but also drive technology transfer and skill development in the domestic aerospace sector.
