Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has announced a comprehensive modernization program for the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) fleet of 84 Su-30 MKI fighter jets, with a timeline of five years for design and development (D&D) before the rollout of the “Super-30” upgrades. According to HAL officials, this initiative will transform the Su-30 MKI into a cutting-edge platform by replacing legacy avionics with indigenously developed systems, aligning with India’s push for self-reliance in defense technology.

HAL officials have stated that the D&D phase for the Super-30 upgrade program is expected to take approximately five years. This phase will focus on integrating advanced, locally developed technologies into the Su-30 MKI airframe. The upgrades aim to enhance the aircraft’s combat capabilities, situational awareness, and operational flexibility to meet modern warfare requirements.

A key aspect of the program involves stripping the aircraft of its legacy avionics, including the mission computer and radar systems. These will be replaced with state-of-the-art indigenous alternatives, developed in collaboration with Indian defense organizations such as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and private industry partners. The new systems are expected to include advanced mission computers, active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars, and upgraded electronic warfare suites, significantly boosting the aircraft’s performance.

The Super-30 upgrade program underscores India’s commitment to reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and fostering self-reliance in defense manufacturing. HAL officials emphasized that the new avionics, including the mission computer and radar, will be designed and produced domestically. These systems are expected to offer superior performance compared to the existing Russian-origin equipment, enabling the Su-30 MKI to effectively counter emerging threats in the region.

Following the completion of the D&D phase, HAL plans to begin the rollout of the Super-30 upgrades for the 84 Su-30 MKI aircraft. The process of retrofitting the fleet is expected to be carried out in a phased manner to minimize disruptions to IAF operations. HAL officials noted that achieving Initial Operational Capability (IOC) for the upgraded aircraft could take nearly five years from the start of the program, reflecting the complexity of the overhaul.

The upgrade process will involve significant modifications to each aircraft, including the removal of outdated systems, installation of new avionics, and rigorous testing to ensure reliability and performance. HAL’s Nashik facility, which specializes in Su-30 MKI production and maintenance, is likely to play a central role in executing the upgrades.

The Super-30 upgrade program is a critical step in maintaining the Su-30 MKI’s relevance as the backbone of the IAF’s fighter fleet. With 84 aircraft slated for modernization, the program will significantly enhance the IAF’s combat capabilities, particularly in the context of evolving regional security challenges. The upgraded jets are expected to remain in service for decades, providing a cost-effective solution to bridge the gap until the induction of next-generation platforms like the AMCA.
