In a significant stride toward bolstering India’s indigenous defense aviation capabilities, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is on track to complete the production of the first Tejas MkII aircraft by the end of October 2025. This milestone marks a pivotal moment in the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) program, which aims to deliver a 4.5-generation multi-role fighter to the Indian Air Force (IAF). According to sources familiar with the development, over 60% of the aircraft’s assembly has already been completed, with HAL focusing on integrating critical avionics and systems typically installed in the final stages of production.
HAL officials have confirmed that most of the equipment currently being integrated includes avionics, electronic warfare systems, and other subsystems reserved for the final stages of production. These components are critical for the aircraft’s operational capabilities, including its Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, advanced cockpit displays, and enhanced weapon systems integration. By October 2025, HAL aims to have the aircraft 100% ready, setting the stage for the next phase of its development journey.
Unlike traditional aircraft unveilings that often involve grand ceremonies with Very Very Important Persons (VVIPs) and media fanfare, the ADA has opted for a low-key approach for the Tejas MkII. The organization has explicitly stated that there will be no ceremonial rollout, choosing instead to prioritize the technical and operational readiness of the aircraft. This decision reflects a pragmatic shift toward ensuring that developmental timelines are met without the distractions of public events.
Following the completion of production by the end of October 2025, the Tejas MkII will commence ground-level testing. This phase will involve rigorous checks of the aircraft’s systems, including its General Electric F414 engine, hydraulic systems, electrical wiring, and avionics integration. Ground trials are expected to be followed by taxi trials, both low-speed and high-speed, to validate the aircraft’s performance on the ground before it takes to the skies. HAL and ADA have set an ambitious target for the Tejas MkII to achieve its maiden flight by the end of March 2026, a timeline that underscores the urgency of modernizing the IAF’s fleet amid regional security challenges.
The Tejas MkII is poised to play a critical role in the IAF’s modernization efforts. Designed as a multi-role fighter with enhanced range, payload, and avionics compared to its predecessors, the MkII is intended to replace aging aircraft such as the Jaguar, MiG-29, and Mirage 2000 fleets. It features a more powerful engine, a redesigned airframe with canards for improved maneuverability, and an advanced avionics suite that includes an infrared search and track (IRST) system for enhanced situational awareness.
