Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has marked a pivotal moment in its ambitious Combat Air Teaming System (CATS) programme with the successful engine ground run of the CATS-Warrior full-scale demonstrator. According to insights shared with idrw.org, HAL is now gearing up to commence taxi trials and is eyeing the first flight within the next few weeks, accelerating the development of this loyal wingman UCAV.

Sources have revealed to idrw.org that HAL is in the process of initiating taxi trials, a crucial step before the aircraft can take to the skies. These trials are essential to test the aircraft’s ground handling characteristics, control systems, and overall system integration.

The clearance for the first flight is anticipated shortly after the successful completion of taxi trials. A technical committee will review the outcomes of these trials, and if all parameters are met, the green light for the maiden flight could be given in the next couple of months.

The CATS-Warrior is not just another drone; it’s envisioned as a key component of a networked combat system where it acts as an autonomous wingman to manned fighters, specifically the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), which serves as the “mothership.” This system aims to enhance combat efficiency by allowing manned and unmanned platforms to work in synergy, performing tasks like reconnaissance, threat engagement, and electronic warfare in a coordinated manner.

The CATS-Warrior is designed with low observability in mind, making it a stealth UCAV capable of penetrating enemy defenses. Its autonomous operation capabilities are meant to reduce the workload on human pilots, allowing them to focus on higher-level strategic tasks.
