The first image of the Kiran UAV, repurposed under the Combat Air Teaming System (CATS) Optionally Manned Combat Aircraft (OMCA) program, has captured the attention of defense enthusiasts and professionals alike, going viral on X. This striking image showcases the aircraft in a unique two-tone blue scheme, hinting at its transformation from a venerable trainer to a cutting-edge unmanned aerial vehicle.

The aircraft in question, initially manufactured in 1985 by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is now nearly 40 years old. Originally designed as the HAL HJT-16 Kiran Mk.2 trainer, this jet has been reimagined for modern warfare.

HAL plans to showcase this transformed Kiran as a static display model at the upcoming Aero India 2025, providing visitors a close look at how legacy platforms can be adapted for future combat roles. The Kiran UAV, under CATS OMCA, can operate autonomously or be controlled from the ground, offering a versatile asset for reconnaissance or combat roles.

Designed to act as a decoy to draw out enemy defenses, the Kiran UAV can also engage in secondary strike missions in contested airspace. Utilizing an aircraft like the Kiran, which soon will be phased out from active pilot training, for such roles represents a strategic approach to defense spending and asset management.

Aero India 2025 will be a platform for HAL to not only display this aircraft but also to gauge international interest in similar conversion projects, potentially opening doors for partnerships or exports.
