Economic Explosives Limited, a subsidiary of the Solar Group of Industries, is reportedly planning to offer the development of a military transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF). According to sources close to idrw.org, the proposal is still in its early stages, and details about the specific segment of aircraft being targeted remain unclear.
Given that Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) is already engaged in the production of the C-295M transport aircraft for the IAF, it is speculated that Economic Explosives Limited’s project could be aimed at the IAF’s upcoming Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) program. This program seeks 60 units to replace the ageing An-32 and IL-76 fleets.
idrw.org sources suggest that Economic Explosives Limited may collaborate with defunct aerospace companies to acquire aircraft designs. These designs could then be developed and manufactured in India if the program is approved by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and garner IAF support.
Developing a military transport aircraft is a complex and resource-intensive undertaking. It requires not only MoD approval but also alignment with the IAF’s operational requirements. The company would need to demonstrate technical capability, financial stability, and a clear roadmap to proceed with such an ambitious program.
If Economic Explosives Limited’s proposal gains traction, it could mark a significant expansion of the private sector’s role in India’s aerospace industry. The company’s entry into this domain would complement ongoing efforts to indigenize defence production and meet the IAF’s evolving requirements.
