The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India is embarking on an ambitious project to integrate Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs) into its aerial arsenal by developing a specialized DEW Pod for helicopters. This initiative aims to create a self-contained system that encapsulates all necessary subsystems, offering a new dimension to helicopter combat capabilities.
The DEW pod is envisioned as a multi-functional, integrated capsule containing all the necessary subsystems for seamless operation. The design aims to simplify integration while maximizing effectiveness. The following components form the backbone of this revolutionary system.
A high-power laser source will serve as the core of the DEW system, capable of delivering 3-5 kW of optical power. This energy level can disable or neutralize small unmanned aerial systems (UAS), communication links, and other airborne threats.
The DEW pod will house its own power generation and thermal management systems, ensuring independence from the helicopter’s onboard resources. This feature will enhance the system’s reliability and simplify platform integration.
Advanced electronic systems will provide the interface for the laser source, beam director, and targeting systems. These modules will also ensure real-time feedback and adaptability in operational scenarios.
The pod’s design will adhere to strict aerodynamic requirements to minimize drag and maintain the helicopter’s performance and manoeuvrability.
The DEW pod will complement traditional weapons systems, functioning as a co-located multi-weapon platform. This configuration ensures versatility and quick adaptability to a range of mission profiles.
The DEW pod aligns with India’s strategic push toward indigenization and advanced defence technologies. Potential applications include deployment on attack helicopters like the HAL Rudra and Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), as well as utility helicopters such as the Dhruv.
