The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has initiated fabrication work on the Pinaka MkIII, a more advanced version of the already potent Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system. This new variant is set to boast an impressive range of 120 kilometres, significantly enhancing India’s firepower capabilities.

Concurrently, the development of a guided version of the Pinaka with a 120-kilometer range is also underway under the Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR) project. Intriguingly, there are indications of plans for both 120km and 300km variants, possibly with a uniform 300mm calibre.

Guided Pinaka MkII has a range of 90kms which is the same as the Russian Smerch self-propelled 300 mm multiple rocket launcher. In 2021, the Indian Army asked DRDO to develop 120 and 300-km variants of Pinaka in response to the Chinese PLA deploying a long-range rocket launcher in the range of 300 km near LAC.

The Pinaka rocket launcher has already proven its mettle as a formidable weapon system, and the development of these extended-range versions underscores India’s commitment to staying at the forefront of artillery technology. The Pinaka MkIII and LRGR systems are expected to provide a substantial boost to the Indian Army’s offensive capabilities.
