The Department of Defence Production (DDP) has taken a significant step towards self-reliance in the crucial area of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with the announcement of the 5th Positive Indigenization List (PIL). This list prioritizes the local manufacture of critical equipment by the end of December 2027, specifically targeting:
Both UHF (Ultra-High Frequency) and C-band datalinks are essential for communication between UAVs and their ground control stations. Indigenizing these ensures secure and reliable data transmission for UAV operations.
The PIL focuses on two key UAV programs:
- Kiran UAV Conversion: This program involves transforming the HJT-16 Kiran, a previously manned trainer aircraft, into an unmanned aerial vehicle. Kiran UAVs are envisioned to play a vital role in various operations, like drawing out enemy air defense systems, Kiran UAVs can help identify their locations without risking manned aircraft.
- CATS Warrior Program: This ambitious program aims to develop an “Unmanned Loyal Wingman” system. These armed Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) will operate alongside manned fighter jets, providing crucial support and firepower during missions.
Local production of UAV datalinks reduces dependence on foreign suppliers, strengthening India’s strategic autonomy and bolstering national security. The PIL incentivizes Indian companies, including MSMEs, to develop expertise in this critical technology. This fosters innovation and propels the domestic defense industry forward.
The 5th PIL marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards self-sufficiency in UAV technology. By prioritizing the local manufacture of UAV datalinks for the Kiran UAV conversion and CATS Warrior program, India is well on its way to developing a robust and indigenous ecosystem for unmanned aerial systems.
